How To: Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) Step by Step

Baker has implemented a multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all email systems. It is required for all students, faculty, staff & alumni with a Baker email account. This multi-step action is required due to the increasing number of compromised email accounts.

You will first need to download the Microsoft Authenticator (preferred) or Duo Mobile app. Both are free on iOS & Android. IMPORTANT: You will need to do the process from a web browser (like Chrome, Firefox, etc) to access your email, along with the Authenticator app on your phone.  Below are step by step instructions for the Microsoft Authenticator app, and attached are instructions for both the Microsoft Authenticator and the Duo Mobile apps.

1. On your phone:  Download the Microsoft Authenticator app

2. On the computer:  Log into your student email account. After entering the password, you will reach a page that says More Information Required. Click Next.

3. On the computer:   you will see Start by getting the App page - after you have downloaded the app (or if you have already downloaded the app), click Next.

4. On your phone:  In your phone app, click the + to add a new account. Click Work or School Account. A box will open that says Add work or school account & give the options of Sign In or Scan QR Code. Click Scan QR Code. A screen will open so that you can scan.

5. On the computer:  you will see the Set up your Account page - go ahead & click Next & it will take you to a page with a QR code.

6. On your phone:  Hold your phone so that you can scan the QR code that shows on the computer. That should automatically add your student email account to the app. Click Next.

7. On the computer:  you will see the message that the system will send a notification to your multi-auth app on your phone. Click Approve.

8. On the computer:  it should show that the notification was approved. Click Next.

9. On the computer: it should now show that everything is successfully set up.
